A Very English Doctor
Twenty-six year old Elliot Devine is a handsome, newly-qualified doctor who has taken up a medical post in Barbados to escape his slightly over-protective adoptive parents, and to find the truth about his parents. Although he arrives with a bang, having saved a life on the plane journey, Elliot is self-deprecating and prone to minor mishaps. He is immediately befriended by Dr Jonny Lucas, a serial womaniser with a carpe diem approach to life. But Elliot is happy to be introduced to the parties, holiday makers and rich residents of the island’s wealthy community and soon has female fans of his own.
In contrast to the sunshine and champagne lifestyle, something malign is afoot, as a series of random murders amongst the Barbadian underclass seem to be linked. Each victim is an addict, and someone has been making unauthorised withdrawals of opiates from the hospital pharmacy.
When Elliot’s friend and colleague Dr Penny Green is attacked and left for dead after witnessing a criminal transaction, DS Breaker, of the Barbadian police co-operates with the hospital staff to find out who is responsible. But it is Elliot who supports his friends through their troubles.
From Doctor Finlay’s casebook to Casualty and Holby City, stories featuring medics are perennially popular. The USP of the Dr Devine series is that it is set in the West Indies; Murder in Paradise ....with doctors.
